8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set. Released on August 1st, 2008.
The United States Mint announced July 22, 2008 the introduction of a new celebration coin product named the 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set. The 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set, priced at $1298.95, features one 24-karat American Buffalo One-Half Ounce Gold Uncirculated Coin and one 22-karat American Eagle One-Half Ounce Gold Uncirculated Coin. Both coins carry the “W” mint mark for the West Point Mint. The celebration package went on sale at the Mint’s online website on August 1, 2008.
The 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set is aimed to be attractive to Chinese and Asian Gold coin collectors. Chinese people in particular associate the number 8 with good luck as their Chinese word for prosperity sounds very similar to the Chinese word for number 8. Even tho the package has a release date of August 1st, 2008 it really aimed so people can buy them and gift them on August 08, 2008 or 08-8-08. The coins are packaged in an attractive hardwood box with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by United States Mint Director Ed Moy.
