Presenting the 2006 Gold Buffalo. The first 24ñKarat .999 fine gold bullion coin from the United States Mint. James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Indian head design makes a return on this fabulous piece. Proceeding this was the American Gold Eagle produced in 1986, composed of .91670 fine gold (22 karat). Compared to other coins, the gold eagle had a larger amount of silver and copper which made it less attractive to investors because of its lower gold content.

With the Gold Buffalo the U.S. Plans to enter the gold coin market seriously. Thanks to the Presidential $1 coin act passed in 2005, they are able to compete with the gold currency of other nations.

The Gold Buffalo is only sold as a proof version by the U.S. Mint. The coin is tailored to collectors rather than investors, however that does not mean its value does not increase. The initial price of the proof when the Gold Buffalo first shipped was $800 USD. In 2007 the price of the proof rose to $899.95 USD and rose once again in 2008 to $1118.88 USD. The proofs bear a “W” for West Point mint on the obverse side that is absent on the standard bullion coins.

The 2006 Gold Buffalo captures the essence of tradition and excellence. Much like the Buffalo nickel before its time, where it once said “Five cents” , it now reads $50 1oz .9999 fine gold and bears the motto ìIn God We Trustî that has been on all U.S coins since 1908.
