Liberty Head Half Eagle

Designed by Christian Gobrecht and first introduced in 1839 the $5 Half Eagle, also know as the Liberty Head Half Eagle or Coronet Half Eagle, enjoyed an uninterrupted run of 70 years before being replaced in 1907. The obverse depicts Lady Liberty facing left wearing a coronet with the word LIBERTY inscribed on it. On the reverse is the John Reich Eagle with shield with the wings enlarged to reach across the coin. Mint marks are located beneath Eagle on the reverse.

Over a 70 year production period there are many key, scarce and even rare dates for the $5 Half Eagle. Many dates during the Civil War are extremely scarce and all coins minted at Dahlonega and Charlotte are extremely limited in quantity. As for rarity, mint records show 50 minted in New Orleans during 1841 but none are known to exist in any collection.
