Liberty Head Eagle

Was first coined in 1838 and was coined every year since until 1907. The Liberty Head Eagle was designed by Christian Gobrecht and it has a composition of 0.900 gold, 0.100 copper. It has a diameter of 27 millimeters and it weights 258 grains. The edge is reeded and from 1838 to 1866, the Liberty Head Eagle had no motto. In 1866 it begin to be minted with motto all the way to 1907.

The Liberty Head or also called Braided Hair motif was two years earlier than the quarter eagle and one year before the style was used on the half eagle. One side depicts a female head facing left, her hair in a bun secured by a string of beads, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY.

Stars surround her and the date of mintage is below. The other side depicts an eagle with a shield on its breast, perched on an olive branch, holding three arrows. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TEN D.(dollars) surrounds it. The Liberty head used in 1838 and early 1839 is slightly differently styled than that used later in 1839, continuing to the end of the series. The most prominent difference can be noted in the shape of the neck truncation.
